The Story Behind Bayou Mahjong
Born and raised on the Gulf Coast, I've always felt most at home on the water.
Weekends are often spent fishing in the marshes of Louisiana and Mississippi, kayaking with my family, or simply slowing down long enough to appreciate the landscapes that make this corner of the world so special.
Mahjong found its way into our family through my mother, whose love for the game first introduced us to the traditions, friendships, and joy that surround it. Bayou Mahjong probably wouldn't exist without her.
That love eventually sparked a simple idea: What if a mahjong set felt less like a game and more like a collection of artwork?
Every illustration begins as a hand-drawn sketch inspired by the waterways, wildlife, traditions, and quiet moments that have shaped my love for the Gulf Coast.
But Bayou Mahjong has always been a collaboration. Those sketches and ideas are transformed into finished illustrations by the real artist in my life, my wife, Mallory, whose love of painting, drawing, and spending time in nature with our little family has helped shape this collection from the very beginning.
The great blue heron standing motionless in the shallows. The flash of a redfish tail disappearing beneath the surface. Brown pelicans perched above the tide. Sugar cane fields stretching toward the horizon. Oyster shells hidden among the marsh grasses. Water lilies floating in still water.
Each tile tells a story.
Bayou Mahjong is both a celebration of the game my mother shared with our family and a love letter to the waterways, wildlife, and traditions of the Gulf South.
Thank you for joining the journey.
